How it’s done:
Typically, shirodhara starts with a preliminary head and face massage followed by the rhythmic pouring of oil over the forehead for 30-60 minutes and often for a series of days to maximize benefit (ie. 3, 7. 14 or 28 days). The longer the duration the more potent the potential effect. Shirodhara is often offered combined with other body work and ayurvedic treatment as part of a detoxification and rejuvenation program called panchakarma.
Sesame oil is the most common oil used but sunflower or other herbed oil can also be employed for their healing properties. While oil is most common is can also be done with ghee, milk or even water.
